A Gift

General Conference

Last weekend I was given a gift.

It is one of the most beautiful gifts I have received in a really long time.

It is of a tree bearing fruit...

The painting is unique in that you can almost feel the light coming from the tree.

It lights up the whole room where we have it.

This weekend I had the opportunity to meet a new friend in Indianapolis.  We talked about the upcoming General Conference and found that we had something in common ––we both LOVE Conference.  I asked her how she prepares for Conference and she gave me a suggestion that I am going to try.

For the two weeks leading up to Conference she rereads the messages of the First Presidency and the Twelve Apostles.  She wants to remember what they taught us six months ago.  She asks herself if she made the changes they suggested.  She prepares her heart to receive the new message they will teach.

I thought about her idea many times this weekend.

Then, when I walked into my home from the airport I saw the painting.  It reminded me of the conversation I had with my new friend.  This is why...

General Conference is a gift.

Each message is like the fruit on the tree.  As we make room for those messages into our homes and our hearts they bring light.

A lot of light.

We have two weeks to prepare for Conference.

Rereading some of the Conference messages is just one suggestion.  Next week I am going to add some more ideas I have gathered over the years.

Maybe you have a really good way to prepare for Conference.  If you do, would you mind sharing it in the comments below?

Deliberate Discipleship:

For the next two weeks we are devoting all of our family scripture reading time to General Conference talks.  It has been a sweet experience.  Already I feel the light of Conference seeping into our home.  The anticipation is filling my heart.

We are preparing to receive the gift.
