A Good Name

Proverbs 18:2 - Provers 24:7

"A good name is rather to be chosen than great riches..."

(Proverbs 22:1)

Each of my children was named after someone they can look up to.

My husband, Greg, and I felt just as Helaman did when he explained to his sons Lehi and Nephi, "Behold, I have given unto you the names of our first parents who came out of the land of Jerusalem; and this I have done that when you remember your names you may remember them; and when ye remember them ye may remember their works; and when ye remember their works ye may know how that it is said, and also written, that they were good.  Therefore, my sons, I would that ye should do that which is good, that it may be said of you, and also written, even as it has been said and written of them."  (Helamen 5:6-7)

Our children enjoy hearing the stories behind why we chose each of their names, and the qualities we admire about the person they were named after.

In our home we have a quote from President Gordon B. Hinckley.  It reads, "Be true to who you are, and the family name you bear."

Shortly after we hung the quote we talked about what it meant to be true to a name.  We wanted our kids to be reminded that everything they do, both inside and outside of our home, represents the entire family.  Their choices determine whether or not they bring honor to our family, and also to the person they were named after.

Then we talked about another important name each of us have been given.  This is the name of Jesus Christ.  King Benjamin said, "Therefore, I would that ye should take upon you the name of Christ...and it shall come to pass that whosoever doeth this shall be found at the right hand of God, for he shall know the name by which he is called; for he shall be called by the name of Christ."  (Mosiah 5:8-9)

Every week as we partake of the Sacrament we have the opportunity to take His name.

Eldert Robert D. Hales reminded us of the blessing that comes through this experience, when we "take His name and always remember Him and keep His commandments, He gives us the greatest blessing He can give us: that is to always have His Spirit to be with us."

If a good name is rather to be chosen than riches...

then His is the best name of all.
