Mormon 4:5 - Mormon 8:13
I have loved visiting the ocean since I was a little girl.
The warm sand under my feet. The soothing sound of waves crashing against the shore. The hunting for sand dollars, and clam shells, and pearl lined mussels.
I have been to the Pacific ocean, the Caribbean, and the coast of Mexico.
But I had never visited the Atlantic ocean until last week.
After arriving at our hotel my husband and I ventured out for a walk on the beach just as the sun was beginning to set.
I did the first thing I always do when I visit the ocean, I stuck my bare foot into the crest of an approaching wave.
It was the coldest ocean I have ever touched.
Then my eyes began combing the beach for seashells.
I was immediately taken by surprise. The clam shells were four times the size of the shells that line the beaches of San Diego. At least four times the size.
I have never seen anything like it before in my life.
I gathered and gathered until both Greg's hands and my hands were full to overflowing. Then, after carefully washing each sea shell out in the sink I laid them out across the hotel bed.
"What are you going to do with those?" Greg finally asked.
"I am taking them home to show all of the cousins," I replied, "They have never seen anything like this in their life...can you believe we seriously just picked these up off the beach?!"
I was completely taken back by the great things we had found. I couldn't help but want to share them with everyone back home.
Today as I was reading in Mormon I rediscovered one of my favorite scriptures, "And whoso receiveth this record, and shall not condemn it because of the imperfections which are in it, the same shall know of greater things than these." (Mormon 8:12)
I couldn't help but think to myself, that is exactly what has happened this year...
As I have opened each new book of scripture I have been led to discover the greater things. Truths I have not known before.
I find that my heart is filled with gratitude.
But even more important, I find myself wanting to share the things I am learning with those I love the most.
The greater things.
Today I walked into the lobby of the school where my children go. The secretary, who happens to be a fellow traveler on this journey to read the entire Standard Works said to me, "Can you believe we are almost finished? We are really going to do it!"
Funny, I had expressed that exact same sentiment to myself earlier that morning.
We are really going to do it.
And as I pondered on how close we really are to the end of that goal I couldn't help but reflect back on what we have read.
The greater things.
We are almost done with the Book of Mormon. We have finished the Old Testament, the New Testament, and the Pearl of Great Price.
There is only one book left.
Perhaps in this last week of reading the Book of Mormon you could reflect over this journey thus far.
What have you gathered this year?
What nuggets have you stumbled upon that you don't ever want to forget?
What are the greater things?
