THIS IS MY JOY

AND MY GREAT REJOICING

Safe

General Conference

These Things I Know, by President Boyd K. Packer

"We live in a very dangerous world that threatens those things that are most spiritual.  The family, the fundamental organization in time and eternity, is under attack from forces seen and unseen.  The adversary is about.  His objective is to cause injury.  If he can weaken and destroy the family, he will have succeeded."

Last week my nephew turned eight.

It was an important birthday for lots of reasons.  He will be baptized being the most important.

But this birthday was a rite of passage in another way also.

This boy loves camping.  Some of his favorite camping activities include whittling, fishing, and shooting rifles.  (Always with an adult, of course.)

His gifts included a very nice camping knife and a Red Rider BB gun.

You should have seen his face.

For many days after his birthday he had conversations with his dad, his uncle, and his grandpa about how to stay safe with such grown up gifts.

Yesterday we had Stake Conference.

We were extended an invitation from our Temple Matron.

She challenged us to pray to see how often we should be attending the temple.

I felt a prompting from the Spirit.  A strong prompting.  This was something my family needed to do.  So after the conference was over I invited my family to accept her invitation and ask how often they should be attending the temple.

We are going to talk about it at FHE.

Today when I read Elder Packer's quote the prompting came again.

We live in a dangerous world.

It threatens those things that are most spiritual.

The family is under attack.

The adversary is about.

His objective is to cause injury.

If he can weaken my family he will have succeeded.

I am not going to let him do that.  I want to give my family the gifts they will need to remain safe.

Those gifts are special, and must be cared for and used properly for my family to remain safe.

Elder Packer suggested several gifts that would protect us.  They included the power of the priesthood, the faithful prayers of a righteous mother, the Holy Ghost, the Atonement, agency, and the Light of Christ.

I can't help but add scriptures, family home evening, and temple attendance to the list.

For the strength of youth.

The Personal Progress program.

Summer is approaching, which means no homework!  But we have home work to do.  Like Moroni, I feel a prompting to add fortifications here.

So we will have many conversations about how to stay safe.

And we will talk about the gifts that protect us.

When an apostle of the Lord speaks of a danger that threatens, and being under attack, and an enemy that can weaken and destroy and cause injury we cannot afford to sit still.

Especially when there are gifts that can protect us.

Deliberate Discipleship:

"Each of us must stay in condition to respond to inspiration and the promptings of the Holy Ghost.  The Lord has a way of pouring pure intelligence into our minds to prompt us, to guide us, to teach us, and to warn us.  Each son or daughter of God can know the things they need to know instantly.  Learn to receive and act on inspiration and revelation."  (Elder Packer)

What gifts of protection does your family need right now to stay safe?  Pray for guidance.  Respond to the inspiration that comes.
