The Gift

Lorenzo Snow, Lesson Two

This year in Relief Society we will be learning more about Lorenzo Snow.  The first thing I did when I received my manual was to look through all of the topics.  So many stood out to me as principles I really would like to know more about.  As part of our journey this year I want to study the Lorenzo Snow manual.  So, each Thursday, you will find a post here about one of his lessons.

Many years ago my mother made me this blanket.

It is one of my favorites.

Each little bubble is filled with soft batting.  When I am freezing I lay it over me, and the heaviness warms me through.  Sometimes I spread it out across the floor and lay right on top of the softness.

There is comfort there.

It is a comfort that reminds me of the Holy Ghost.  A softness surrounding, warming through, comforting.

But the Holy Ghost offers more than just comfort.

The Spirit confirms truth, bears witness, and teaches our souls.

Through the Spirit promptings come.

Through the Spirit direction comes.

Lorenzo Snow teaches us about Naaman, who was afflicted with leprosy.  He made application to the prophet for the removal of that affliction.  "The prophet, having the Holy Ghost upon him, which communicates the Mind of God, informed him that by washing in Jordan't waters seven times, he might be restored."  (Lorenzo Snow, Chapter 2)

The Holy Ghost has the power to communicate the Mind of God.

There have been moments in my life where I have wished to know what God had in mind for me.  Particularly in moments of illness, I have wondered what He, as the Great Physician, would suggest in my behalf.

In the book of Romans we read, "Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered.  And he that searcheth the hearts knoweth what is the mind of the Spirit, because he maketh intercession for the saints according to the will of God.  And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose."  (Romans 8:26-28)

This gift of being able to access the mind of God is unspeakable.

It allows us the opportunity to follow His counsel prescribed for us individually.

"The Lord still marked out certain acts, promising to all those who would do them, certain peculiar privilege; and when those acts were performed ––observed in every particular––then those blessings promised were sure to be realized."  (Lorenzo Snow, Chapter 2)

The prophet, through the manifestation of the Spirit, explained what Naaman must do to be healed...Go wash in Jordan's waters seven times.

Whether it made sense or not, to receive the blessing promised by the Great Physician, Naaman had to perform the act, in every particular.

It was then that the promised blessing came.

I wonder if you are in need of divine inspiration at this time?

Perhaps you could deliberately find ways to allow more of the Spirit into you heart.  Consider the music you listen to, the conversations you have, the media you choose to watch.  Is it conducive of the Spirit?

Then pray that the Spirit will intercede in your behalf, according to the will of God.

Be prepared to follow the promptings that come in every particular.

"When this order was understood and properly attended to, power, gifts, blessings, and glorious privileges followed immediately; and in every age and period, when these steps are properly attended to and observed in their proper place and order, the same blessings are sure to follow."  (Lorenzo Snow, Chapter Two)

Deliberate Discipleship:

Today try to find one way you could allow yourself to be led by the Spirit to know the Mind of God for you.  Maybe you could spend some time in prayer or the scriptures seeking to learn more of how the Spirit works.   Perhaps you might listen to music that will allow the warmth of the Spirit to fill your soul.  Be prepared to follow the promptings you receive.

Blessings are sure to follow...
