The Gifts God Sees
I received an unexpected gift on Sunday.
It came in the form of a Conference talk. Our teacher in Relief Society referenced the talk given by Elder Eyring in the Priesthood session, Help Them Aim High.
How is it three months past Conference and no one has mentioned this talk yet to me? It is good. Really, really good. It is my new favorite talk from Conference. Promise me you will take a moment to read the whole thing...you will be so glad you did.
Elder Eyring said, "As a young father I prayed to know what contributions my children might make in the Lord's kingdom...I knew each was an individual, and therefore the Lord would have given them specific gifts for each to us in His service."
Then he encouraged us to help our children learn to recognize the spiritual gifts with which they were born explaining that "every person is different and has a different contribution to make. No one is destined to fail."
Immediately my mind started to wander. I tried to think of each of my kids individually. I wondered if I would know instinctively what their gifts were.
For just a second my heart felt guilt...why did I not think of doing this sooner? I wondered. My oldest is 21. My second oldest turns 20 today. My girls are 16 and 13. As I read through the words of the talk I thought of all the years I had already missed out on where I could have been helping my children understand their gifts. There was a moment of regret. Immediately the Spirit responded, you can do it now.
I read the promise given to us by an Apostle of the Lord, "I promise you the Lord will tell you as much as you need," and my heart was encouraged.
My kids have their whole life in front of them. Each of them will be doing His work in one capacity or another. After all, I have plenty of years ahead to help them discover their gifts.
So I decided to begin this week.
I want to follow the counsel of Elder Eyring.
"God knows our gifts. ...I pray that you will be inspired to help others discover their special gifts from God to serve. I promise you that if you ask, you will be blessed to help and lift others to their full potential in the service of those they lead and love."
I feel that anticipation that fills your heart when someone hands you a beautifully wrapped gift. I can't wait to discover what is inside the hearts of each of my children...the gift that God already knows, but that I have yet to discover.
There is a sign that hangs above my pantry doors, "See the Possibilities."
That is my goal for this week. To discover the gifts, to see the possibilities, and to help each of my children live up to their full potential.
Not all at once...but a little at a time, just like Elder Eyring has.
I can't wait to watch them grow.
Could you be inspired to help someone discover their special gifts from God? Would you be willing to help them visualize, hope, and work to obtain that gift? Elder Eyring promised, "As you seek revelation to see gifts God sees in those you lead...particularly the young––you will be blessed to lift their sights to the service they can perform. With your guidance, those you lead will be able to see, want, and believe they can achieve their full potential for service in God's kingdom."
